DCI boss Amin urges North Eastern unity against terrorism
Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin has called on residents of the vast North Eastern region to support security agencies in the fight against terrorism.
Speaking in Wajir at Sabunley Senior School, his former high school, Mr Amin said concerted efforts from stakeholders were needed to end radicalisation in the region and across the country.
“The challenges that we face, particularly the threat of radicalisation and violent extremism, require us to unite and take collaborative action,” he said, while appealing to the local community to support the government’s efforts in dealing with terror threats.
The DCI boss’s call came as the counties of Mandera and Garissa continued to record incidents and movements of members of the terror group.
In Mandera, five quarry workers were killed earlier this month by suspected Al-Shabaab militants. In Garissa County, six police reservists were killed on March 23 when the militants raided their camp in Fafi.
Security agencies in the region have always blamed the local community for failing to provide the much-needed intelligence to help combat terrorism.
Mr Amin challenged parents, teachers, religious leaders, and neighbours in Kenya to come together and help the youth in society.
“We must create an environment that nurtures the aspirations of our youths and keeps them engaged in positive and constructive activities,” he said.
While comparing the security situation in the three counties of the North Eastern region, Mr Amin commended security managers in Wajir for what he termed a job well done.
“I must commend the security teams in Wajir County that have ensured this county has remained calm and well managed. They have continued to diligently monitor security issues,” he said.
He challenged the security teams to remain vigilant as intelligence teams continue to report terror threats in the region.
“We should focus our efforts on the issues of gender-based violence (GBV), drugs, and land-related disputes in the region because these are the issues that demand our attention,” he said.
He also challenged the local community to confront their age-old cultural practices, including Maslah, in dealing with GBV in the region.
“Maslah undermines the rule of law and hinders justice for victims. We have to support the rule of law. We must stand united in support of the rule of law, which upholds the rights of everyone,” he said.

Human rights activists in the region have raised concerns about the use of Maslah, an informal, customary dispute resolution system, in resolving disputes.
They argue that the mechanism disadvantages women in society, as the final decision is always made by elders.
Under Maslah, victims are pressured and coerced by elders to accept the resolutions.
