Danny Miles, the cancer patient who sought Safaricom’s help for his daughter passes on
Maurice Ochieng, popularly known as Danny Miles, a man who captured the hearts of many Kenyans after he appealed to Safaricom to help raise his daughter, has passed away.
Confirming the news, Danny’s wife Florence Odege told NTV that Danny passed in her hands at on Tuesday night at 9:55 pm.
Danny had been battling cancer for over a year before his death and became popular on social media on January 19, 2023, when he posted a heart-wrenching message on Safaricom’s Facebook page, explaining his situation and asking for help.
He revealed that he had been diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma in March 2022 and had been struggling to save money for his family. He had hoped to take them on a vacation and take her daughter to school, but his illness had drained him financially.
“I had been saving so that I take my small family to a vacation but I have been drained i can’t. I am living with the help of friends. My young daughter Britney Dova is still young she has not started school yet I was planning but I am sorry I have failed as a dad,” Danny wrote on Safaricom’s wall on Facebook.
He said he had also lost his left arm due to the cancer, which had metastasized, leaving him in a dire situation.

Danny’s message touched the hearts of many Kenyans, and the post quickly went viral on social media, with many people offering to help him and his family.
In addition to the outpouring of support on social media, Kenyans also came together to help Danny Miles and his family in a more tangible way. After Danny came up with a paybill number, many people contributed to help keep him in the hospital and pay his medical bills.
Odege told NTV that Safaricom never returned Danny’s call and that she had to rely on well-wishers to survive because Danny was the breadwinner.
“Safaricom never responded. It was really difficult (when Danny got sick). I only survived from the help of wellwishers who catered for his treatment and daily needs,” she told NTV.
However, his condition continued to deteriorate, and he was recently transferred to St. Monica Hospital in Kisumu after experiencing difficulty breathing.
Danny’s last message on social media was a poignant one: “It attacked again and I really suffocated. Whatever happens, I belong to God.”
On Tuesday, March 21, 2023, Danny Miles passed away at the age of 28, leaving behind his wife Florence Odege and their young daughter Britney Dova.
Odege told NTV that Britney has since started school, currently in playgroup, and is doing well in her studies.
