CS Murkomen issues directives in light of Londiani road accident
Roads, Transport and Public Works Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued new directives following the Londiani Junction road accident on the evening of Friday 30 June.
Murkomen, who visited the accident site on Saturday morning, urged motorists to be careful on the roads further providing details of the actions that the Ministry of Transport would undertake.
Among the directives was that all markets along the road reserve would be relocated, a move that will be implemented by the county government in partnership with the national government.
“County Governments in partnership with the national government through the intergovernmental framework should construct markets off the Highways even as KeNHA constructs access roads to the markets,” he said in an official press statement.
Speed limits within the Londiani area are going to be revised, bumps erected and proper signage provided.
In addition to that he ordered the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to install speed detection cameras at the site of the accident.
The re-testing of PSV and commercial service vehicle drivers will continue as well.
Murkomen further noted that the transport ministry will work on finalising the development of the NTSA Operation of Commercial Service Vehicles Regulations in consultation with various stakeholders.
The ministry will also hold consultative meetings with the East Africa Community to guide on the harmonisation of motor vehicle inspection in the region.
He instructed county transport safety committees in all 47 counties to embark on road safety trainings for traders, pedestrians, school children and boda-boda operators.
Police and NTSA are to intensify anti-drunk operations in the country and EPRA is to investigate the sale of unadulterated fuel to motorists.
Death toll currently stands at 52. 32 other people were injured in the accident.
