County govts, ministries asked to resolve pending audits by June 2024
County governments and all State agencies have been directed to resolve all pending audit queries by June 2024.
Counties are leading in audit queries, even though the numbers have dropped since the first years of devolution.
This emerged during the ongoing sensitization programme for county audit committee members by the Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (PSASB) in Lake Naivasha Resort.
In the last couple of years, the Auditor-General has raised hundreds of audit queries in the State Ministries and Counties, the majority of which have not been resolved to date.
According to PSASB Chairman Pius Nduati, the move to clear all the pending audit queries was part of the government zero-fault programme.
Nduati admitted that this would be a tall order but quickly noted that it could be achieved as the State moved in to address the issue of good governance and service delivery.
Addressing the press on the sidelines of the meeting, the chairman said that they were working with the county governments and the State agencies in achieving the directive.
Nduati noted that the majority of the queries from the Auditor-General were recurring issues that could be resolved if there was goodwill from all the involved parties.
At the same time, he called for support on county audit committees which for years have been seen as the enemies in the devolved system.
The board CEO Fredrick Riaga was full of praise for works done by counties in addressing issues of audit queries that for years have become the norm in the devolved system.
He noted that the transition from cash to accrual accounting for all government agencies and counties was underway.
On his part, Andrew Musungu from the Council of Governors (COG) said there was a lot of improvement in audits by county governments.
