Contractor accused of assaulting female employee freed on Sh15,000 bail
A city contractor who allegedly beat up his female employee for allegedly colluding with another worker to demand undue remuneration is facing assault charges.
Davendra Keshra is accused of assaulting Sharon Beywa at South B Shopping Centre in Nairobi on 15 October 2020.
Mr Keshra allegedly assaulted the complainant, a health and safety officer for his company, following a disagreement over compensation for an injured worker at the construction site.
Beywa had arrived at the site and found Keshra arguing with an employee she had taken to hospital after he was injured while on duty at the same site.
The worker had been told by doctors to take some time off work due to the treatment he was undergoing, which reportedly did not sit well with the contractor, who felt he was paying for a worker to rest at home.
Keshra called her in and they argued about the claims the worker was making.
Keshra demanded receipts to prove that the worker was claiming the exact amount of money he had spent travelling to hospital after being injured, but he and Beywa couldn’t get them because most matatus in Nairobi don’t issue receipts to passengers.
The argument got out of hand and Keshra allegedly started hurling insults at Beywa and the complainant left the scene and went to her office.
While in her office, the accused stormed in and allegedly punched her on the cheeks.
The complainant later noticed that she was bleeding and the suspect left, threatening to fire her.
Beywa sought medical treatment and continued to work until she left the company.
In September this year, the complainant’s jaw developed complications and she went to a hospital for further treatment where she was told that she had soft tissue injuries that had not fully healed.
She later reported the matter to the South B Police Station as she continued with her treatment and the police began investigating the matter.
Beywa told police that she was afraid to report the incident at the time because she feared for her job. The suspect was later arrested following investigations.
He denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Caroline Mugo of the Makadara Law Courts.
Keshra was released on Sh15,000 cash bail. The case will be mentioned on 8 December ahead of the hearing on 11 April next year.
