Command shake-up: Adamson Bungei new Nairobi police boss
Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki has made good his threat to effect changes with the Nairobi police Command in the wake of rising reported crime within the Capital.
Just hours after the CS and Inspector General of Police (IG) Japhet talked tough amidst criticism of laxity with the security agencies and an alleged go-slow following the disbandment of the DCI’s Special Service Unit, the shake-up has affected the top brass.
Baringo county police commander Adamson Bungei has been promoted and is the new Nairobi Police Boss, taking over from Manase Musyoka who was yet to assume office following the changes recently effected by the then-acting IG Nur Gabow in the last weeks.
Musyoka had been named to take over from James Mugera who has since retired from the Police Service.
In the changes announced by Koome, Bungei is no stranger to city security, having served as the OCDP Buruburu and Central before he was transferred to Baringo two years ago.
Nyale Munga, who is the deputy to the IG and applied for the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) position but didn’t get has been moved to the Kenya Police headquarters as the Director of Police Reforms.
Abdallah Komesha who was recently moved to the DCI headquarters as the Head of personnel has replaced Munga.
Jacinta Muthoni has been appointed the director of personnel at vigilance House.
Also affected by the changes is Boniface Maingi who is the outgoing National Police Service Director of Personnel and has been named as the director of operations taking over from Rashid Yakub who has been deployed to head the community policing wing as the director.
Judy Lamet who was the director of child protection Unit at the National Police Headquarters was promoted to deputy director of police operations.
The changes that have been communicated directly to the affected officers comes after Kindiki and Koome issued an ultimatum to those causing mayhem within the Capital and its surrounding. There has been an outcry of daytime mugging by knives wielding thugs and those with crude weapons terrorising residents of Nairobi and even killing some of their victims.
Yesterday, Kindiki announced a crackdown on Nairobi muggers, vowing not to relent until the criminal elements are flushed out.
“The leadership and command of the police have changed the command in Nairobi and deployment is effective immediately. The NPS has put in place a multi-agency, multi-disciplinary response to this problem and to get these errant sons -and maybe a few daughters to get out of the streets and put them where criminals belong, ‘said Kindiki yesterday at his first public press conference since he assumed office.
He warned, “Those boys who have dared the government and want to tell us that they can take over the city and make it a crime center, we have heard you and therefore we are coming effective immediately.”
Nairobi governor Johnstone Sakaja met with the top brass of the police for a crisis meeting on the state of security in the capital.
Koome has also vowed to go after the criminals, issuing a 30 days ultimatum to those holders of illegal firearms to surrender or face the full force of the law.
