Co-wives agree to burry billionare husband on homesteads’ border after weeks standoff

It was a hard decision to make but Thika Chief Magistrate had no other option rather than applying Solomonic wisdom to avert a protracted legal tussle against two wives that could have seen the body of a Juja billionaire rot in the morgue.

Stella Atambo ordered that the remains of Christopher Mbote Chege be interred on a family fence separating his two homesteads where his two widows reside in a bid to unlock the impasse.

Mbote who died on January 16, this year was scheduled to be buried today but his second wife Anne Njeri went to court citing exclusion from burial plans.

She claimed that were the burial to continue, the first wife Margret Waithera who had dug the grave on her homestead would deny her and her children access to the grave site.

After a day of deliberations, it was settled that Mbotes grave is dug on the boundary separating the two homes, with a government surveyor ordered to have some part of the boundary land for the grave.

The two wives live on the same two-and-a-half acre prime piece of land at Juja town where the deceased was also residing before his demise.

Mbote is one of the billionaires who own Juja with huge investments running across Kiambu and other urban centres in the country.

His body has been lying at Kenyatta University hospital funeral home following the dispute.

Atambo spent a whole day beseeching the two families to avoid court battles and accord the deceased a decent burial.

At one stage, the magistrate had to cut short the court proceedings and summoned Juja Kikuyu elders (Athuri a Kiama) to arbitrate between the two parties but the exercise was futile.

The plaintiff had vowed to continue with the case.

A hearing and mention dates of the case were set but the chief magistrate insisted that they should agree as a family.

At one time, there were suggestions that he be buried at his Mang’u rural home as the Juja prime parcel of land attracted more value in terms of selling price compared with Mangu.

After all mediation bids failed, she decided to take it by herself where she ordered out all strangers in the court and was left with only the two wives and their 13 children.

It was at this juncture the two families decided to bury the hatchet and came to a common ground and agreed that the deceased be buried in the middle of the houses belonging to the two wives.

It was agreed the natural fence separating the two wives be uprooted and the grave transferred to the new site.

The measurements for the graveyard were agreed upon and a government surveyor is to hive the 8-10ft piece of land from the mother title.

It was further agreed that the second wife is involved in the burial arrangements which was now pushed to the 3rd of February 2023 and is to be performed under tight security provided by OCS Juja. Thus the Solomonic wisdom saved the situation.
