City Hall announces recruitment of drivers and plant operators
Nairobi City County government has announced a recruitment exercise targeting 114 drivers and 80 plant operators in the county’s mobility sector.
The drivers and operators are expected to replace the ageing staff in the mobility and works sector in the county government.
According to the Chief Officer for Mobility Boniface Nyamu, the recruitment exercise will ensure the county has adequate staff working on a permanent basis to aid in providing services to city residents.
“This recruitment exercise will enable the county to have its own drivers and plant operators. The recruitment is timely, we have an aged workforce, most of our current drivers will be over 55 years in the next few years and will be retiring. Had we failed to recruit drivers now we would have a lot of problems in the future,” Mr Nyamu said.
City Hall has only employed two plant operators with the rest of them working on a casual basis.
A total of 15,000 people had applied for the opportunities with only 250 getting shortlisted.
The Nairobi City County Public Service Board (NCCPSB) yesterday carried out interviews for the shortlisted candidates.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has been under pressure to consider a number of Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) employees who were left out in the previous recruitment exercises carried out by the county.
The former NMS employees have been carrying out demonstrations at City Hall urging the governor to give them a priority in the ongoing recruitment exercise.
NCCPSB Chairperson Thomas Kassoa said the county will give a priority to those drivers and operators who were working under NMS and those working as casuals.
“These drivers and operators have been working with us, some under NMS and others as casuals. We decided we confirm them because they have experience,” Mr Kassoa said.
The plant operators and drivers will work on different road construction projects that have been launched by the county government.
