Cherera Four files: Fresh details of IEBC commissioners alleged link to Azimio leadership
NTV has gained access to the documents filed, before the Aggrey Muchelule tribunal, against the four IEBC commissioners who rebelled against the Commission just hours before the final announcement of the August presidential election results.
The detailed documents reveal that senior officials from Azimio One Kenya had access to the apartments that hosted the ‘Cherera Four’ commissioners and made frequent visits on several occasions just after their press conference in which they denounced the results of the presidential election on August 15.
NTV has learned that the four commissioners through Edwin Ng’ong’a, Raila Odinga’s close ally, who had stayed at the Yaya Apartments and Hotel for two months before the elections, managed to secure 3 rooms at the establishment, which is under Busseim Investments, along Argwings Kodhek Road.
In this invoice no 51715, the four were booked in apartments 21, 23, and 27 on August 15 and their departure was slated for August 19.
At exactly 8.36 pm on August 15, the Yaya apartments and hotel management admitted to the reception, 4 guests in the company of bodyguards and other individuals. The four are identified as the four IEBC commissioners.
Two commissioners headed straight to the rooms while two others proceeded to the reception to be checked in but they objected to having their details taken. The four Commissioners were booked in as tenants and none of their names are indicated on the hotel’s logbook
Edwin Ng’ong’a would later pay the bills on August 16. Interesting to note is the number of times high-caliber political operatives allied to the Azimio One Kenya alliance would visit the establishment.
On August 15, the Executive Director of Azimio One Kenya’s campaign secretariat, Raphael Tuju was booked in as a visitor at the Yaya apartments at around 9.45 pm. His destination was apartment 23. He left at 10.14 pm
George Oduor Ongwen, who has been described as the cog in the wheel of Raila Odinga’s ODM party, visited the Yaya apartment 21 on August 16 around 12.50 pm to 1.20 pm August from around 1250hrs to 1320hrs
Records also show that the Kanu party, one of the top constituent parties in the Azimio coalition, also had its secretary general Nick Salat also visit the Yaya Hotel and Apartments. At 10.41 am on August 17, Salat entered apartment number 21 and left 8 minutes later. He came back to the same apartment 21 at 4.54 pm on the same day and left after 4 minutes.
The details of their conversations and which commissioner was in what apartment are unclear but raise more suspicion.
In his affidavit, IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati indicated that the four commissioners wanted the results altered in favor of a run-off.
In his affidavit, IEBC Commissioner Abdi Guliye, also swore that Raphael Tuju and Amos Wako attempted to force the commission to declare Raila Odinga president-elect or force a re-run in the August 9 polls. The claims were also documented by IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati
Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, and Justus Nyang’aya have all since resigned from office and only Irene Masit has stayed put. The tribunal which will kickstart its proceedings on December 20, insists that the commissioners will be investigated individually.
