Chege Njuguna wins UDA ticket in Kandara constituency primaries
Chege Njuguna has clinched the UDA party ticket in the highly contested party nominations in Kandara constituency.
Njuguna received 7,826 votes, followed by Titus Njau in second place with 5,335 votes, Stephen Mwaura in third place with 4,414 votes, James Kamau in fourth place with 2,191 votes, and Evelyn Waithira in fifth place with 1,267 votes.
“I’d like to convey my heartfelt appreciation to all who came out today and voted for me to be the UDA flag bearer. I’m humbled and honoured to have won. I urge all Kandara residents to come out in large numbers and vote for me on January 6 to stamp this win,” Njuguna said after his win.
In anticipation of the by election scheduled for January 5 of the following year, 14 candidates had entered the race.
In the August election, Njuguna ran for the parliamentary seat for Kandara and finished second to the former Mp Alice Wahome, who has since resigned after being appointed to the cabinet.
Wahome who was vying on a UDA ticket emerged the winner after garnering 39,009 votes.
Her closest competitor Chege Njuguna got 19,260 votes, James Maina came in third with 3,188 votes while Peter Kinyanjui was ranked fourth with 2,052 votes.
Chege having done intensive campaigns before the August poll could have given him an upper hand against his opponents.
His win indicates the political dynamic in the area with people opting to go their way other than where they were being directed.
Immediate former member of parliament had made inferred statements about the candidate she preferred to accept the nomination and subsequently become the representative.
Although she did not publicly support her preferred candidate, those who worked in her office were actively lobbying on his behalf at the local level.
Last week, Wahome said during a tour of her backyard that the residents would ultimately decide who would receive the ticket.
She also pledged to work closely with whoever will be elected to the seat to help steer development agenda in the area.
