Chebukati threatens to sue Raila over bribery claims, dares him to release proof
The immediate former Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Wafula Chebukati, has threatened legal action against Azimio la Umoja One Kenya chief Raila Odinga over claims he requested for a bribe.
According to a demand notice issued to Raila, the law firm acting on behalf of Chebukati has taken issue with remarks made about him at the rally, that insinuated he was involved in bribery.
Chebukati claims the alleged comments have an unconstitutional purpose and effect of lowering his dignity and injuring his reputation among the right-minded persons in society.
He demanded, Raila shares with his legal team the CCTV footage that claims to have within seven days, or else, he takes legal action against the opposition leader.
During Sunday’s Jacaranda Rally, Raila claimed Chebukati accompanied by former commissioners Prof Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu visited his Karen home just before the elections.
Calling the revelation a fresh dossier, the former prime minister challenged the three to come clean on the purpose of the visit even as he called for their arrest.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader claimed to possess CCTV footage of the three in his house and dared them to state what they demanded during the visit.
“He (Chebukati) says there are people who wanted to bribe them but they should say what they were doing in my house. Why did you come to my house? What did you ask for? I have CCTV footage and if they continue playing with our minds, then I will release it,” said Raila to an ecstatic crowd who urged him to reveal more.
Chebukati has vehemently denied the allegations, which he claims have caused him to suffer serious reputational injury.
“Our client vehemently denies your allegation that he met you during the election year, let alone the election period, and in particular, at your house, as alleged by yourself,” the demand notice in part.
