Cheaper ugali as state partly takes up maize flour production cost
Kenyans will buy maize flour at a subsidised cost of KSh. 100 for a 2kg packet after the government announced that it will cater for part of the production cost for the next four weeks. The move comes at a time when Kenyans have been complaining of the high cost of maize flour which had shot up to over KSh. 200.
Ahead of the 2017 election, there was a similar outcry of the same after the cost of maize flour shot up to KSh160 for a 2kg packet. At the time, the government intervention brought down the cost to KSh.90. The government blamed the rising cost on the lack of enough maize in the local market and removed all levies on imported maize.
On Monday, the Ministry of Agriculture said it had made a deal with millers to bring down the cost of flour which has been retailing at over KSh210 at major retail outlets in recent weeks. A 1kg packet will retail at KSh52 and the 500-gram packet at KSh30.
“The Ministry of Agriculture shall subsidize the price of maize flour being produced/sold by the miller for a period of four (4) weeks from the date of this contract,” reads part of the agreement.
