Captain Hillary Litali: Cheerful General Ogolla aide who left too soon

Everlyne Litali, mother of 29-year-old Captain Hillary Litali, was overwhelmed with grief following the death of her son in a tragic helicopter crash in Sindar area, Kaben location in Elgeyo-Marakwet County.

Hillary, the first-born son in a family of two siblings, died alongside General Francis Ogolla and 7 others in the Thursday afternoon crash.

Speaking at her home in Taners, Shabab in Nakuru town, Everlyne told NTV how she heard of her son’s death.

“I was in church and after the service I heard people murmuring that Ogolla’s helicopter had crashed. I was worried because I knew my son worked in his office. I tried to call his phone but it was switched off, I tried to call his brother but his phone was also switched off,” she said.

Captain Litali’s father, Dickson Litali, said he received the news via social media after one of his friends sent him a list of names of people who had died in the fatal accident.

“Someone sent me a message with a list of names of people who died and asked me to check if my son’s name was on the list. I saw that Hillary’s name was there, but I brushed it off and told him that if anything had happened, the KDF had a way of getting information to the family,” he said.

Officers from Lanet 3KR later came to their home to break the news of their son’s death.

The family said they had lost a child they depended on.

“He was very hardworking, brilliant, supportive,” his father said.

The captain last visited their home over the Easter holidays.

“He came and drove us, his mother and I, to our farm in Kitale during the planting season,” his father said.

The last time Hillary spoke to his father was yesterday, hours before the fateful crash, when he told him he was accompanying his boss, General Ogolla to work.

“He called me yesterday to tell me they were leaving for work and I wished him well,” he said.

“I have been robbed of my son in whom I had so much hope. He had promised me that he would come back in May so that we could finish the roof on our house in Kitale so that I could move in and live there,” his mother said.

“He always asked us to pray for him,” added Everlyne.

Hillary was educated at Nakuru Muslim Primary, where he scored 397 marks. He later moved to Emining High School in Sacho and scored a B+ in his KCSE exams.

He was one of 140 people shortlisted from over 1000 applicants to join the KDF as a cadet in 2013. After completing his training, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in 2017 and rose to the rank of Captain in 2020.

From 2021 to 2023, he worked with the former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Robert Kibochi.

In 2024 he returned to training, where he was to rise to the rank of Major, and upon completion in March he was recalled to the office of CDF Ogolla, where he served until his death.

Captain Litali leaves behind a wife, whom he married in 2023, and a daughter.
