CAF ‘cautiously happy’ with Kenya’s CHAN preparations
There has been growing speculation this week that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is dissatisfied with Kenya’s preparedness as one of the three co-hosts of the rescheduled 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to kick off on August 2.
Concerns stem from the slow progress in renovating the key facilities designated to host matches in the biennial tournament.
CAF Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba arrived in Nairobi on Monday night from Tanzania, where he had conducted inspections of several tournament venues.
“When CAF President Motsepe came, he set the standard high. You see in Côte d’Ivoire—people are still talking about the quality of that tournament. Those standards must be met,” said Mosengo-Omba.
While in Nairobi, he met with Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya to discuss ways to accelerate the completion of ongoing works at various stadiums.
“In Kasarani those who have been there, you have been able to realise that we have put a canopy, we’ve fixed the sits and many of the field-related issues are done. But we have other areas like VAR and many other equipment that need to be fixed, and this morning we have also paid Sh 400 million to the contractor so that they can fix some of the issues,” said CS Mvurya.
The state of playing surfaces at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nyayo National Stadium, and the two training venues—Police Sacco Stadium and Ulinzi Sports Complex—has drawn scrutiny. But Mosengo-Omba noted other concerns as well.
“I came here in December with the CAf president, and there was no grass on different pitches. Today, you can even play golf there. This shows the huge progress that has been made since December. I said there are some aspects that have to be completely done before we can say referee, you can kick off the game,” he added.
The 2024 CHAN tournament has already been postponed twice. Initially scheduled for September last year, it was first pushed to February, and later to August, after CAF reassessed the readiness of the co-hosting countries—Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. CAF has not issued public deadlines for the countries to meet, but the clock is ticking.
