Bungoma Senatorial by-election to be held on 8th December, IEBC announces
The Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that the Bungoma Senatorial by-election shall be held on 8th December 2022.
This follows a declaration of vacancy in the office of Member of the Senate for Bungoma County, which was confirmed by the respective Speakers of the Senate in a letter dated September 26th, 2022.
The position became vacant after former Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula was elected National Assembly speaker.
IEBC has requested that any political party planning to participate in the by-elections submit the names of those contesting a party primary as well as the date of the party primary on or before Thursday, October 13, 2022.
The commission has also requested that political parties planning to run candidates in this election hold their primaries on or before Wednesday, October 19, 2022.
“The campaign period for purposes of the Thursday, 8th December, 2022 by-election shall commence upon nomination of the candidate on Wednesday, 9th November, 2022 and cease on Tuesday, 6th December, 2022 being 48 hours before the by-election day,” IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati said in a gazette notice.
So far, David Manali Wanjala, Joseph Waswa and lawyer Eric Nakhurenya have showed interest in the position.
IEBC has also announced by-elections for five other areas namely Ololmasani, Kyome/thaana, Utawala, Mumias North And South Gem Wards in Narok, Kitui, Nairobi City, Kakamega And Siaya County Assemblies respectively to be held on the same day.
