Bungoma priests and bishops denounce “Jesus of Tongaren” as a fraud
Bishops and priests in Bungoma County have come forward to denounce Eliud Wekesa, who is known as “Jesus of Tongaren,” saying that he is a fraud and a liar who aims to benefit himself by using the name of Jesus.
They claim that Wekesa has gone against the Bible by comparing himself to Jesus, and referring to the writings that in the last days, there will be many who will show up and want to be like Jesus.
“We are followers of Jesus, and no human being can be Jesus. We separate ourselves from the world as a whole that hears this perversion. These are people who don’t understand the Bible at all, and we as priests say that Jesus of Tongaren is a hungry man,” said Bishop Calistus Barasa.
Wekesa, who hails from the village of Lukhokwe in Tongaren Constituency, Bungoma County, has been making headlines in the media, claiming to be the Jesus of the Bible.
However, the church leaders have said that they will never accept his announcement, calling him a fraudster.
“We know that Jesus will return at an unknown time, and we know that John the Baptist went. We know that Jehovah is the almighty God, the creator of heaven and earth. All that you have heard is gossip about these people who compare themselves to Jesus. They are all cowards, and we as a church do not recognize them at all,” said Rev Frederick Ogara.
The church leaders regret that this behavior has only spread in Bungoma and say that it should be stopped immediately. They also criticized other self-proclaimed saints who have emerged in the area, such as Jehovah Wanyonyi and the fifth prophet John, calling them profit-driven and not agents of God.
“I want to join the bishops and priests to denounce the things that are going on in our county about Jesus of Tongaren, Jehovah Wanyonyi, and Prophet John of the fifth. Jesus said in the last times, many liars will appear like that, and something important he said, ‘Don’t listen to them. They will say I am here; I am there. Don’t go; listen to them.’ We also won’t listen to them. They are very hungry people,” added Gladys Wafula.
The priests and bishops hope that their statements will help put an end to the false claims and bring back sanity in the county.
