Bungoma County to reduce scholarship beneficiaries from 8,000 to 3,000
The Chief Education Officer (CECM) for Education in Bungoma County, David Wamamili, announced that the county will be vetting the fifth cohort of Wangamati Scholarship Program beneficiaries in order to reduce the number of students receiving the scholarship from 8,000 to 3,000.
This decision has been made in an effort to only provide the scholarship to the most deserving students.
Wamamili explained that the former administration’s decision to increase the number of scholarship beneficiaries from 2,000 to 8,000 was ill advised and politically motivated.
This year, the County Government will only sponsor 675 students through the scholarship program.
According to the County Education policy, the County Government has the authority to do so, especially if a student is deemed not fit for the scholarship.
To qualify for the scholarship, students must be both needy and bright, with a minimum score of 350 on their exams.
The remaining needy students will receive bursaries, with each ward receiving a total of KES 4 million for distribution among its students.
In addition to the scholarship and bursary programs, the County Education Chief Officer, George Kombo, stated that the County Government will also be providing Ksh 180 million to support bright but needy students in each of the 45 wards in Bungoma County.
However, Kombo acknowledged that it is not financially sustainable to continue supporting all 8,000 students through the Scholarship Program due to a lack of sufficient funds.
Overall, the vetting and reduction of scholarship beneficiaries in Bungoma County aims to ensure that the limited resources available are utilized effectively to support the most deserving and needy students in the region.
