Briton with Kenyan roots in the race to become UK’s next Prime Minister
British Conservative Rishi Sunak on Sunday announced he is standing to be prime minister, just weeks after failing in a first attempt — and setting up a potentially bruising battle with his former boss Boris Johnson.
The ex-finance minister has his roots in East Africa; his father was born and raised in Kenya while his mother was born in Tanzania. Sunak, however, was born in the port city of Southampton, England in 1980.
Sunak, 42, is the second Conservative MP to declare a run at the top job, after cabinet member Penny Mordaunt launched her campaign on Friday. Rishi vowed “integrity, professionalism and accountability” and to lead Britain out of “profound economic crisis”, which experts say has been worsened by the aborted policies of outgoing leader Liz Truss.
Sunak is making a second attempt to become UK’s first Hindu Prime Minister. This comes days after Liz Truss stepped down from the PM position.
