Brace for falling space debris this weekend, Kenya Space Agency warns
Kenya Space Agency has called on the public to be on the lookout for debris from a rocket body which is expected to fall from the skies and land on the country over the weekend.
In a statement shared by Major Aloyce Were, Kenya Defence Forces aerospace engineer working at the Kenya Space Agency (Ksa) on Friday, the space agency said it was on high alert.
“The Kenya Space Agency wishes to notify members of the general public of a potential re-entry of a space object Norad ID 61909/2024-205R which is significant debris from a rocket body of unknown mass. The object is of particular interest to Kenya as the projected flight trajectory is over the Eastern African region including Kenya in a North-South path from the North Eastern region to the South East of Kenya towards Tanzania for further southward,” KSA said.
“The re-entry of the debris from a rocket body is predicted to occur on Saturday 19th April 19, 2025 at around 11:15 PM plus/minus 15 hours 46 minutes. This means the re-entry through the earth’s atmosphere could occur within the window from Saturday 19th April, 2025, 7:15 am to Sunday 20th April 2025, 3:01 pm,” the agency added.
Kenya Space Agency has called on Kenyans to report any dropped space debris to the security agencies though the police, administrators and the nearest military camp for the necessary action.
Kenya Space Agency’s space debris alert comes barely four months after space debris dropped from the skies and landed at Mukuku Village in Makueni County, sparking widespread fears of the country’s safety from falling space objects. Kenya Space Agency identified the metallic ring weighing around 500 kilograms as a separation ring of a rocket.
No one was injured. Questions over the fallen space debris remain unanswered as Kenya Space Agency pursues its owners.
“The object could pose a significant risk to life and property along its path owing to its large size. The Kenya Space Agency is working with partners to obtain more precise prediction of the flight path and timeline. While the debris is not expected to drop in Kenya, KSA out of abundance of caution, wishes to be advise members of the public to be vigilant and to be on the lookout for potential debris dropping from or flying through the sky within the specified period,” Kenya Space Agency said over the space debris incident predicted for the weekend.
