Boost for Kenya’s green energy projects as Ruto holds talk with AfDB’s President Akin Adesina
President William Ruto on Monday held talks with the African Development Bank President Akin Adesina at the sideline of COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
The two leaders discussed multiple issues regarding climate change.
According to a statement by President Ruto via Twitter, the AFDB is an important partner in his transformation agenda for Kenya, particularly in agriculture, infrastructure, energy and health.
“We welcome the bank’s commitment to support Kenya’s green energy projects such as geothermal and wind,” Ruto said.
The Turkana Wind Farm and Menengai Geothermal Power Station are the key Kenyan renewable energy projects that have benefited from the decisive support of the African Development Bank.
President Ruto is expected to address the over 50,000 attendees of the 27th session of the annual United Nations climate change conference which kicked off in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egpyt.
He is expected to call on world leaders to take immediate action to save the world from the impacts of climate change.
As Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry took over the Conference of Parties (COP) Presidency on Sunday, the summit agreed to discuss financing to help vulnerable nations, such as Kenya, cope with the impacts of the losses and damage as a result of climate change.
“The inclusion of this agenda reflects a sense of solidarity and empathy for the suffering of the victims of climate-induced disasters. And to this end, we all owe a debt of gratitude to activists and civil society organisations who have persistently demanded the space to discuss funding for loss and damage and thus provided the impetus needed to bring this matter forward,” he said at the opening plenary.
Loss and damage are one of Africa’s priority areas, as the continent continues to suffer serious impacts of climate change, The entire Horn of Africa is currently stuck in the worst drought in 40 years, which has already killed more than 200 elephants and two million heads of livestock in Kenya alone.
