Bobi Wine criticises EAC Presidents for not holding each other accountable

National Union Party and People Power Movement leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, better known as Bobi Wine, has urged East African leaders to hold each other accountable, particularly for human rights violations.

Bobi Wine was speaking on Saturday in Mombasa, Kenya, where he was hosted by Haki Africa, just a day after the Uganda Human Rights Accountability Conference, which was held in Nairobi on Friday, November 18.

Wine criticised the EAC president’s silence on human rights violations in his home country of Uganda. While it is prudent to hold individuals accountable for their roles in human rights violations, he is outraged by the EAC and the African Union’s silence.

“While I want to hold General Yoweri Museveni accountable for his atrocities and his impunity, in the context of East Africa we shall hold leaders of East Africa accountable. It is unfortunate that over time the East African Community has been reduced to a club of presidents. Where none of them holds the other accountable but instead are there to buffer each other and support each other. They tend to put diplomacy ahead of democracy and human rights,” he said.

He added, “It is very disappointing to see the European Union and United Nations and other international organisations looking out for the rights of Africans when we have our own African brothers  and sisters whose major preoccupation is to keep themselves power at the cost of rights and freedoms of their own people.”

Wine while asked about what he and People Power Movement is fighting for said, they are fighting to be human beings.

“In Uganda, we are reduced to fighting not for democracy not for civil rights but for human rights. We are fighting for the right to be human beings. To have the right to think for ourselves. To have the right to our mouths and to own our brains.”

Hussein Khalid, Director of Haki Africa, condemned human rights violations in Uganda while advocating for a democratic Uganda. Hussein urged the newly elected Kenyan representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) to spread the message of justice and respect for human rights throughout Eastern Africa.

“A free Uganda is a free Kenya. A democratic Uganda is a democratic Kenya. Our struggles are united,” said Hussein.

According to Human Rights Watch, the 2021 elections in Uganda, won by President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, were marred by widespread violence and repression.

Security forces arbitrarily detained and abused opposition supporters and journalists, killed protestors, and disrupted opposition demonstrations. There has yet to be any commitment to end Uganda’s violations of freedom of association, assembly, and expression.

Human Rights Watch further asserts that for serious violations, such as torture and violations of the right to life, law enforcement, security forces, and the armed forces are immune from prosecution.

Hussein also said Haki Africa would oppose any move to amend the Constitution to remove the two-term limit. He said, “We want the Constitution to the letter. We are urging Kenyans to resist such attempts. Any individual in power for ten years and wants more is incompetent.”

Wine has already called on Kenyans to be vigilant on the matter said, “It is you and only you the people of Kenya alone that can retain your Constitution that can protect your Constitution. Defend your constitution before your constitution is too weak to defend you.”

Fafi MP Salah Yakub revealed the clamor to amend the Constitution when he stated that some politicians within the UDA party were looking into a constitutional amendment bill to replace the two-term limit with an individual’s age – of 75 years.

If the move is successful, President Ruto will be able to continue running for the next 20 years.
