Bipartisan talks faces major hurdle on reconstitution of IEBC
Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja are facing a major hurdle in the re-constitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC): a litmus test on whether the two teams will agree to disagree.
The Azimio Co-Chair in the National Dialogue Committee, Kalonzo Musyoka, has admitted that though the committee has agreed on the re-constitution of the Electoral Body, both sides hold different views on how the re-constitution process should be undertaken.
The re-constitution of the IEBC is a top agenda for the dialogue committee, as the talks are expected to enter a critical stage of deliberations starting Friday this week.
The Committee met at the Bomas of Kenya on Monday after filtering memoranda by the public and narrowing them down to set the ball rolling.
“We will be engaging with public stakeholders together with those who have presented their memoranda. Among these groups, the secretariat of the IEBC, a working group on the two-thirds gender rule, and IEBC selection panel stakeholder engagement will be on invitation, “Ichung’wah stated.
The IEBC Secretariat and the Selection Panel are expected to appear before the committee with questions on whether the IEBC Panel shall be discontinued with their operations currently in limbo despite the government spending money on allowances for the seven-member team led by Nelson Makanda.
Meanwhile, the spike in fuel prices and the unforgiving cost of living are taking a toll on Kenyans, with many Kenyans calling for urgency in addressing the issue, and leaders from the Azimio fold want the opposition to withdraw from the talks until the spike in the cost of fuel is addressed.
In a document exclusively seen by NTV, Kenya Kwanza says it has comprehensive policies to address the cost of living, while Azimio says it will table proposals on lowering the cost of living with the view that the Kenya Kwanza Manifesto and subsequent policy prescriptions will not address the high cost of living.
The dragging of the talks also raises a red flag about the urgency of the matter at hand.
