Bipartisan dialogue teams open doors to public

Members of the public and other stakeholders from different sectors will now have the opportunity to attend the national dialogue sessions between the Azimio and Kenya Kwanza coalitions.

They will also be able to submit their proposals on the various issues raised.

This decision follows an agreement and the signing of a framework agreement between the two parties.

The two co-chairs of the National Dialogue Committee, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa, on Wednesday, affixed their signatures to the document outlining the framework of the agreement.

Not only do they agree with the framework, but the committee will also welcome views and memoranda from the public and interested stakeholders.

This opens the door to proposals such as that of Tiaty MP William Kamket, who has proposed the creation of nine additional counties.

“We have also agreed that we shall be extending invitations to stakeholders and members of the public to present their memoranda to the committee, and we shall be sending out an invitation or an announcement to the media,” said Kimani Ichungwah.

“A lot more work remains to be done, and therefore when we call on stakeholders, I am sure Kenyans will know they are stakeholders,” Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka remarked.

One of the issues slated for deliberation is the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The IEBC selection panel had started its proceedings, shortlisting several candidates for the commissioner positions. However, the committee now states that its activities might be affected.

“We have resolved to engage that selection panel, requesting them to take notice of the matter that is under deliberation in the dialogue,” explained Kimani Ichungwah.

“You never know…you could end up with the reconstitution of the panel itself. You never know. Everything is on the table,” added Kalonzo Musyoka.

The dialogue committee has decided to focus on five key issues for discussion.

Despite Kenya Kwanza’s insistence that the high cost of living was not up for discussion, it has been listed as a top agenda item. Kalonzo once again urged Kenyans to disregard those opposed to the talks.

“We continue to tell Kenyans to ignore the naysayers who might feel threatened because this is wonderful work,” Kalonzo Musyoka emphasized.

“Our 60 days began yesterday, and we reaffirm our commitment to this,” stated Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwah.
