Bhang users at high risk of depression: Nacada
A new report by National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (Nacada) indicates that individuals who use both cannabis and alcohol face the highest risk of depressive disorder, which is 2.3 times greater compared to non-users.
Depressive disorder is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, prolonged loss of interest or pleasure in life, often accompanied by symptoms such as disrupted sleep patterns, guilt, inadequacy, and even thoughts of self-harm.
Discussions surrounding cannabis, locally referred to as “bhang,” have sparked interest among Kenyans, particularly on platforms like X (formerly Twitter). One notable case is the “Mathe wa Ngara” incident, where a significant portion of the population advocated for its legalization due to the euphoric effects it induces.
The survey also reveals varying usage rates based on gender and age groups. Among males aged 15 to 65, the prevalence is notably higher, with approximately one in 26 individuals (475,770 people) currently using cannabis. In contrast, the statistic for females is substantially lower, with one in every 333 (43,037 individuals) being current users.
Furthermore, the report sheds light on regional disparities in cannabis consumption. The Nairobi region stands out with the highest prevalence of current cannabis use, alarming at 6.3 percent. Nyanza follows at 2.4 percent, and the Coast at 1.9 percent, indicating significant variations in usage patterns across different parts of the country.
The statistics regarding youth and cannabis usage paint a bleak picture.
Among youths aged 15 to 24 years, one in every 37 individuals (193,430) is currently using cannabis. For those aged 25 to 35 years, it’s one in every 48 individuals (174,142).
