Baringo: Ilchamus community gets their localised version of the Bible
The Ilchamus community living in Baringo County, has for the first time received a translated version of the Bible’s New Testament.
The National Director at Bible Translation Literacy, Reverend Peter Munguti said it has taken the community 16 years to translate the New Testament to the Maa dialect spoken by the Ilchamus people and are looking forward to complete translation of the Old Testament as well.
“Even as we celebrate, the work is not over. The Old Testament has not been translated although work has started,” he said.
The translation is aimed at enabling the Ilchamus people better understand the Bible as well as serve as a means to shun retrogressive parts of the Ilchamus people’s culture as noted by one of the doctors within the community, Dr. Solomon Letangule.
“This is one of the communities that is preserving their culture and we have both positive and negative aspects of the culture but now that we have the Bible, people are going to access the Bible and understand it. They are going to shun the retrogressive parts of our culture and I believe it is going to help us as a community to move forward with the rest of the community and the rest of the world so that we can be able to do the things that are consistent with the current generation,” he said.
