Bandits hack old man to death, flee with 250 goats in Isiolo
Tension is high in Garbatula and Benane areas of Isiolo South after armed raiders from Lagdera in the neighboring Garissa County, hacked to death a 65-year-old man and made way with 250 goats.
According to authorities, Mzee Abdi Buke was attacked while herding his goats.
Fatuma Roba who witnessed the incident said a group of bandits ambushed them while they were grazing their goats at around 11.00 am on Tuesday, beating up the elderly man witha blunt wooden stick and an axe as she pleaded with the attackers to spare them.
She managed to ran away and alert the locals in Manyatta Demo village of Garbatula as well as the police, who rushed to the area and rescued the old man who was bleeding profusely.
Unfortunately, Mzee Buke succumbed to the injuries and passed on while receiving treatment at the Garbatula Sub County Hospital.
Garbatula Assistant County Commissioner Joseph Mamboleo said that security teams from Garbatula and Lagdera were on high alert to recover the stolen goats and arrest the suspects, calling for calm among the bereaved locals in order to enable security officers to act on the matter.
Adan Denge, a sub county peace committee member and elder condemned the attack, noting that the incident took place only 10 kilometers from Garbatula town. He accused herders from the neighboring Lagdera and Balambala areas of Garissa County of abusing the good gesture of generosity extended to them in terms of pasture areas, and instead killing and stealing from the host community.
Denge called on elected leaders to come together and support the locals and government authorities in dealing with the insecurity situation which was getting out of hand, fueled by the ongoing drought which has brought many people close to their grazing areas.
Hassan Demo whose speech was interrupted by the news of the passing on of the old man said that the incident happened while the elders from Garbatula were in a meeting to deliberate on matters regarding the protracted row with their neighbors from Garissa County.
The residents urged the national government to increase the number of National Police reservists in the area and also conduct regular patrols along the Isiolo – Garissa border in order to help curb the increasing incidents of insecurity in the area.
The elders noted that such attacks have been on the increase in the recent past, arguing that the conflict was no longer about pasture and water, but an expansionist agenda where herders from Garissa want to forcefully occupy part of Isiolo land.
They appealed for thorough investigations into yesterday’s murder incident, recovery of all the stolen goats and arrest of those involved.
