Badi: NMS to handover services to Sakaja from next week
Governor Johnson Sakaja is set to receive his wish of disbanding the Nairobi Metropolitan Services starting next week. Speaking during his campaigns, the former Nairobi Senator made it clear that he has no ounce of intention to extend the NMS tenure.
Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director-General, Lieutenant General Abdalla Badi confirmed that they will start the process of handing over functions of the county back.
Nairobi Metropolitan Service was established in February 2020, following an agreement between the then-governor of Nairobi County, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, and Devolution Cabinet Secretary, Eugene Wamalwa, and accepted by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
NMS was handed some of the functions including County Health services, County Public Works, Utilities and Ancillary services as well as County Government Planning and Development. Its initial term was set to end in February 2022, but it was extended for a further six months to end in November 2022.
After the handover, animosity between State House and Sonko grew, with the former Governor blaming the President for arm-twisting the county government. Since then, NMS has been a hot potato and a bone of contention even during the campaigns.
Nairobi’s new governor seems to have won the supremacy war, but the handover presents his first hurdle of maintaining and upgrading the quality of services by the county government.
Speaking at his swearing-in ceremony today, Sakaja said, “The people of Nairobi are our customers. We will treat them with dignity and honour.”
President-elect William Ruto expressed his faith in Governor Sakaja’s leadership while extending his support to the new governor.
The outgoing Governor Ann Kananu has urged city workers to welcome and be ready to work with Sakaja for the betterment of the county.
