Azimio faults State over Kilifi cult deaths, says unforgivable failure of security intelligence
Azimio la Umoja One Kenya leaders have faulted the government, accusing it of failing residents of Kilifi as shocking deaths by starvation of members of a suspected cult continue to be unearthed.
“This is a colossal failure of the State. It is an unforgivable failure of security intelligence that, in theory, extends from Nairobi all the way to the Shakahola and every village in Kenya, ending with the chiefs, assistant chiefs, village elders and Nyumba Kumi heads. This system failed and Kenyans deserve to know why,” the Opposition party said in a statement signed by National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi.
Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome on Monday morning said the death toll in the Shakahola massacre is expected to rise to 58 as more graves were being exhumed, the number was at 47 at the end of the operation on Sunday.
The bodies are being exhumed at the 800-acre property associated with the cult leader Paul Mackenzie.
Mackenzie is said to have appeared on police radar back in 2017 and has been in and out of their custody at least three times over his bizarre religious beliefs.
The police have now been put on the spot over the releases.
“The suspect behind this massacre has been in and out of court with his accomplices on several occasions. But the criminal justice system set them loose to go and commit more atrocities,” Wandayi said.
“The criminal justice and security systems are too archaic, too self-important and too greedy to stand up for and protect the poor Kenyans. Because the victims were poor villagers, nobody cared and everyone who should have cared looked the other way. This colossal failure of security, intelligence and community must be punished so that it does not happen again.”
