Aviation strike: Passengers stranded at Moi International Airport in Mombasa
Passengers at Moi International Airport (MIA) in Mombasa faced significant delays on Wednesday due to a go-slow by airport staff.
By 10:00am, long queues had formed, with some travellers waiting for hours to board their international flights. One frustrated passenger remarked, “The queue is moving so slowly. We were informed of delays, but we hope to travel soon.”
Another passenger expressed concern, stating, “We want the world to know that the corrupt government is selling Kenya.”
The protest, which began Tuesday night, also affected operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, as well as Kisumu, Eldoret, and Mombasa airports.
By Wednesday, no flights had departed from JKIA, and operations at MIA were also disrupted.
Airport staff voiced dissatisfaction with the planned leasing of JKIA to India’s Adani Enterprises, citing a lack of transparency from the government.
“We gave notice that the strike would start last night. We are protesting in solidarity with our colleagues and asking passengers to return to their hotels or homes,” a protesting staff member said.
Staff, many of whom were recently transferred to these airports, believe the leasing issue has jeopardised their jobs.
“The takeover feels like we’ve already lost our jobs,” said Odhiambo Ronald, a staff member at MIA.
Lokiru Zachary, a shop steward at MIA, highlighted the difficulty in obtaining details about the Adani deal, calling for public access to the contract and more transparency.
“We need public participation,” added Issa Mugandi, another protester.
The staff are demanding that the government provide land for Adani to build new facilities, rather than taking over existing national assets. They argue this could be a form of “recolonisation” and are determined to fight for their rights.
By 10:00am Wednesday, only Lufthansa had landed at MIA, with no local flights taking off. The staff remain committed to their peaceful demonstration, seeking justice and transparency.
