Atwoli urges Ruto to deal with rogue private security firms underpaying workers
Central Organization of Trade Unions Kenya (Cotu) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has called on President Ruto to deal with the issue of private security firms working unregulated, causing infringement on workers’ rights.
Atwoli in a statement on Tuesday said Cotu has received an alarming number of complaints against many private security companies that do not observe the minimum wage guidelines.
“We have written to a number of these private firms demanding that they first formalize their operation, through being registered and listed by the Private Security Regulatory Authority so that they pay taxes to the government,” Atwoli said.
He added that the majority of the 183 registered private firms remain the worst violators of security workers’ rights and welfare.
“Cotu would like to call on the government of His Excellency President William Ruto to crack down on these rogue private security firms and ensure that these firms are not only registered through PRSA, so that the government can collect their fair share of the revenue, but also workers are paid a decent salary that is above the minimum wage,” Atwoli said.
