ATMIS marks its first year in Somalia, pledges to stabilise the country
The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has marked its first anniversary with a renewed commitment to support Somalia’s stability process. During a press conference at the Mission Headquarters in Mogadishu, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, expressed his appreciation for the contribution of ATMIS Troops and Police Contributing Countries.
Mohamed commended the military, police, and civilian units for their commitment to restoring peace and stability in Somalia.
Since its reconfiguration from AMISOM to ATMIS in April 2022, the transition mission has achieved significant gains in securing territories. According to Ambassador Souef, the situation in ATMIS’s area of responsibility over the past year has shown a decrease in Al-Shabaab activities with the security situation remaining calm.
Ambassador Souef also thanked international partners, including the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), and the European Union (EU), for their continued support not only to the Mission but also to the people of Somalia.
Somalia’s Federal Minister of Defense, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, also commended ATMIS for its contribution to the Somali-led peace and security process. He pledged the Federal Government of Somalia’s continued collaboration with ATMIS to ensure a smooth transfer of security responsibilities to Somali Security Forces in accordance with the Somalia Transition Plan (STP).
The joint press conference highlighted ATMIS’s achievements in securing territories and its commitment to supporting Somalia’s stability process.
