At least 10M vehicles have used Nairobi Expressway, Moja Expressway CEO Zhao
On Tuesday, stakeholders and government officials gathered at the Westlands toll station to celebrate a significant milestone in the Nairobi Expressway project. The 27-kilometre expressway, which was launched in July 2022, has seen the use of at least 10 million vehicles since it opened.
The project, which cost KES 87 billion, was implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and is the largest private-public partnership project in the country.
Moja Expressway CEO Steve Zhao said during the celebration, “As of 7th February 2023, the total number of vehicles that have used the Nairobi Expressway stands at ten million.”
On average, about 50,000 vehicles use the expressway daily, which is five times the number of vehicles since trial operations began on May 14, 2022.
Zhao also highlighted the positive environmental impact the expressway has had, stating that a recent study showed that “if a motorist makes 10,000 trips using the ETC (electronic toll collection) option, they save about 314 litres of fuel and reduce about 670 kilogrammes of carbon from the environment.”
The CEO also cited measures taken to address safety concerns, such as the establishment of a road asset and corridor management unit that provides 24-hour rescue service.
State Department of Roads Principal Secretary Joseph Mbugua praised the Nairobi Expressway project, saying, “The Public Private Partnership Act enables us to hasten development by tapping opportunities within the private sector. This provision, as witnessed in the expressway, may be the way to go with other major developments like the Mombasa-Nairobi highway and the Nyali bridge, among others.”
KeNHA Director General Kungu Ndung’u described the expressway as a “game-changer for the seamless connectivity and decongestion of roads.”
Ndung’u added, “We are celebrating a successful project which we hope will encourage other investors to come in, not only in roads but also other sectors.”
The Nairobi Expressway has 10 interchanges and includes the SGR terminus at JKIA, Eastern Bypass, Southern Bypass, and Enterprise Road.
The expressway was launched by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022 with the aim of reducing traffic congestion on Mombasa Road and improving mobility in the city.
