Anti-tax protests: Missing prison warden found safe
On Sunday 30 June, a section of Kenyans were shocked by the news that 25-year-old Jackson Kuria Kihara, also known as Shakur the Cop, a Kenyan prison officer, had gone missing.
Prior to his disappearance, Shakur had taken a bold stand against the 2024 Finance Bill and the government’s decision to send police officers to Haiti. Something many feared would jeopardise his safety.
However, NTV can exclusively report that after three days of disappearance, Shakur was found a few minutes after 6pm on Monday. This was after his family and lawyer Benjamin Njeru raised the alarm about his whereabouts.
“At some point, DCI officers visited his home and asked about his whereabouts. All this time, he had not been charged or summoned anywhere. So out of reasonable apprehension for his safety, he went into hiding,” the lawyer said.
Shakur’s lawyer advised him to go to a police station to record a statement about what had happened, but he thought it prudent to first seek an anticipatory bail order from the court to ensure his safety and freedom.
“The application for anticipatory bail was granted this weekend, but unfortunately as soon as we got the order, we heard that he had been abducted, or rather that he had gone missing. So now the search has started on social media,” said Mr Njeru.
In the course of his advocacy, Shakur also told those around him that he felt unsafe.
“He wrote several texts about the nature of the calls he was receiving and that he was being followed or stalked and that his life was in danger, which unfortunately came true,” Mr Njeru added.
Those close to him ruled out the possibility that he was still in hiding as he would have maintained communication with his family and lawyer for his own safety.
The missing person’s report was filed at Kiamumbi police station under OB number 29/06/24/06.
Shakur was reportedly abducted by police officers before being held incommunicado until Monday. NTV had earlier contacted the Kiambu sub-county police commander to ascertain the status of investigations.
However, he said the matter had been referred back to the Kenya Prisons Headquarters as it was under their jurisdiction.
