Acting IG Noor Gabow announces nationwide crackdown on contraband
The Acting Inspector General of Police Noor Gabow has ordered a nationwide police crackdown on all illegal and contraband goods, as well as other types of tax evasion schemes.
The police chief in a letter to the Kenya Police, DCI, and Administration Police said some dishonest taxpayers had created new schemes to cheat and evade paying taxes due, having an impact on revenue generated.
“This follows the detection of numerous tax evasion schemes around the country which deny the government due revenue to fund public services,” Gabow said in a statement.
“The crackdown to commence with immediate effect under coordination of respective commanders at all levels,” he added.
Gabow asserted that in any instance where tax evasion incidents are discovered, the police will collaborate with KRA to reach a logical conclusion.
Last year, KRA said the excisable goods sector had witnessed robust growth over the past years rendering it vulnerable to counterfeiting.
According to KRA, some excisable goods prone to counterfeiting include cigarettes, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The excisable goods sector is one of the most robust and fastest-growing that support the economy.
In the 2020/2021 Financial Year, for instance, KRA undertook three major destruction exercises of compounded excisable goods.
In May 2021, KRA destroyed contraband excisable products with a market value of over KES 1 billion. The products ranged from cigarettes, beer and spirits to bottled water.
Had the goods found their way into the market, KRA said the government would have lost more than KES 400 million in tax revenue.
