Abductions: Four of six missing youth found alive
At least four of the six Kenyans who were recently reported missing after they were allegedly abducted by unknown individuals have been found alive, their families have confirmed.
Billy Munyiri Mwangi, a college student, Ronny Kiplangat, brother of cartoonist Kibet Bull, Bernard Kavuli, a content creator, and Peter Muteti, were freed in various parts of the country on Monday morning.
Mr Mwangi, who was abducted in Embu town, walked home in Embu; Mr Kiplangat, captured in Kikuyu, was freed in Machakos; Mr Kavuli, who was roughed up and driven away in Ngong, was found in Kitale, while Mr Muteti, who went missing in Uthiru, was dumped by his abductors in Nairobi city centre.
Their release under unclear circumstances leaves two other recent abductees— Cartoonist Gideon Kibet, alias Kibet Bull, and Steve Mbisi— unaccounted for.
In total, the whereabouts of at least 25 victims of suspected abduction and enforced disappearances, who have been missing since June 2024, at the height of youth-led anti-government protests, remain unknown.
In its latest report released in late December, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights said at least 82 cases of abductions had been reported since June 2024, with 29 of these cases not yet resolved.
Mr Mwangi, Mr Kavuli, Mr Muteti and Mr Kiplangat were set free by the hitherto unknown kidnappers on the morning when their families, friends and human rights activists planned to resume street demos to push the government to either release them or explain their whereabouts.
President William Ruto’s administration has denied involvement in the abductions and disappearances, with the Head of State saying police should account for the missing persons.
On Friday, while addressing mourners at the burial of the mother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Dr Ruto asked Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja to provide answers to grieving families.
“The National Police Service, being an independent body, is able to conduct investigations.” Ruto said in kabuchai, Bungoma County.
Mwangi, who went missing on December 21, after being abducted by four hooded men in Embu town arrived home looking frail.
According to his family, he was not able discuss his ordeal immediately and was taken to hospital for medical check-up.
On the other hand, Kiplangat, who went missing after attending a church service in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, on December 25, 2024, told his family that he was dumped in Machakos County.
His sister Mercy Cherotich told the Nation that he called on Monday morning, saying he had been set free and was on his way to Nairobi.
“He was not able to say much. He was struggling,” she said.
Mr Kavuli was found more than 400 kilometres from Ngong, where he was picked up by unknown men.
“Good morning good people. My brother is safe and sound we thank God for His protection. Thank you friends for your support and prayers,” his sister Mary Kavuli posted on Monday morning.
Mr Mwangi was roughed up by hitherto unidentified individuals as he was awaiting services at a barbershop in Embu town on Saturday, December 21.
His father Gerald Karicha on January 2 told the High Court in Nairobi that Mwangi’s abductors had trailed him for days before he went missing.
The getaway car, Karicha told Justice Bahati Mwamuye, was a double cab while the vehicle that trailed him was a white Toyota Fielder, registration KDG 527 D.
“Your honour, that car had surveyed my home for three days. The other car was a double cabin pick up which was behind that Toyota Fielder car,” he narrated amidst sobs.
He narrated that the Fielder was leading the double cabin, but it sped off upon reaching where Mwangi was. He said that four men alighted from the double cabin and whisked his son away.
“When they came to where Mwangi was, the Fielder was ahead. The Fielder immediately left but four guys, very strong guys from the double cabin, alighted, mishandled by son and threw him inside the vehicle. And he asked them, who are you, where are you taking me, wakasema utajulia mbele (you will know later),” narrated Karicha.
