683,000 Kenyans have taken loans from Hustler Fund as of Thursday 4pm

The newly launched Hustler Fund continues to gain traction, with 683,000 Kenyans said to have applied for and received loans by 4 pm yesterday, December 1.

Kenyans had borrowed KES 413 million in loans by the end of the day yesterday, with KES 7.7 million repaid.

According to a State House source, 1.6 million people had registered for the credit facility.

However, there have been questions regarding the loan limits with some Kenyans complaining it is too little.

Bonvencha Kichava, a boda boda rider in Kisii was shocked to learn he can only borrow up to KES 600 which he says cannot change anything in his life.

“What is the point of me borrowing KES 600 that I can make in a day? I am very disappointed with this money,” he said.

Kichava thought he could borrow between KES 5,000 and KES 20,000 which according to him would help him in clearing his motorbike loans.

His views were also echoed by others with George Momanyi saying, “In my view, this money is very little. There is no business you can do with this money,” he said.

During the launch on Wednesday, President William Ruto stated that the newly launched Financial Inclusion Fund will benefit more than 15 million Kenyans.

The rollout, according to Ruto, is part of the government’s plan to provide Kenyans with products that are responsive to their businesses, and it will also free people from predatory lenders.

“We are establishing a culture of saving, investment and social security,” he said.

The government will contribute KES 50 billion per year for the next five years to the Fund, which will provide personal, microbusiness, SME, and start-up loans.

The Hustler Fund Personal Loan, introduced by the President, allows borrowers to borrow up to KES 50,000 at an annual rate of 8%.

According to the President, the remaining Hustler Fund products will be available between January and May of next year.
