6, 841 children were reported missing between July 2022 and May 2023, Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore says.
While marking International Missing Children day at Shalom House in Nairobi, the CS noted the need for parents and caregivers to stay vigilant as perpetrators use dynamic tactics to kidnap children.
“Child protection systems should be evolving and their roles becoming more responsive to the challenges of the contemporary society that we live in. As stakeholders, we need to continuously assess the situation and come up with strategies on how best we can prevent children from getting lost,” she said.
CS Bore said the ministry, through the Directorate of Children’s Services, is currently in the process of developing guidelines to support initiatives that can address the issue of missing children.
She called on members of the public to play a role in ensuring the safety of children by working with law enforcement.
“It is an obligation we must keep to collectively promote safe environment for our children. I urge all members of the public to closely work and coordinate with local children offices and law enforcement agencies whenever a child is reported missing. Community members should always be ready to provide any available information that can help in the search of missing children,” she urged.
1,296 children have been reunited with their parents and caregivers between July 2022 and May 2023.
The platforms currently being used and addressing cases of missing and found children are: the Child Help line 116, Missing Child Kenya Hotline – 0800 22 33 44 and the DCI Toll-free Crime Reporting Hotline – 0800 722 203.
