59 pupils rushed to hospital after eating wild fruit in Athi River
More than 59 pupils from Canaan Integrated Primary School were rushed to Athi River Level 4 Hospital yesterday after eating wild fruits on the school premises.
The pupils complained of stomach pains and vomiting, prompting the school management to call for an ambulance.
According to the County Health Executive Dr Daniel Yumbya, 8 of the pupils who were taken to the hospital were admitted due to severe pain while the others were allowed to go home last night.
7 of the 8 students admitted were discharged this morning and only one student remains hospitalised.
According to the school principal, the students picked and ate fruits from a tree in the school compound during the lunch break yesterday.
Samples of the fruits were sent to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) for further investigation.
The school administration has been advised to take steps to remove the trees from the school premises as a preventive measure against future incidents.
“We have collected the samples of the wild fruits consumed by the children and sent them to KEMRI for analysis and have also instructed our public health officers to destroy the remains of the trees in line with established safety guidelines,” Dr Yumbya said in a statement to the press.
The minister also announced that the county government had met the entire cost of the students’ treatment.
