26 sacks of bhang worth Sh6m busted in Ongata Rongai church
Police officers in Ongata Rongai in Kajiado North Sub County seized 26 bags of bhang, suspected stolen electronics and a slaughtered goat from a church on Monday evening.
Angry members of the public followed a trail of a stolen goat that led them to African B Church where they ambushed suspects who were preparing to cook a slaughtered goat.
A violent scuffle is said to have ensued between the residents and some of the church’s ‘congregants’.
After subduing the ‘worshippers’, the mob attempted to bring down the semi-permanent church, but were restrained by police officers who arrived in time.
Kajiado North Deputy County Commissioner James Taari told reporters during the civilian raid that they recovered 26 bags of bhang, each bag containing 40 ‘stones’ with an estimated street value of Sh6 million. Other suspected stolen electronics were also recovered from the scene.
The slaughtered goat was reportedly identified by its owner.
In the raid, two male suspects were arrested after their ringleader and other accomplices managed to evade the police.
“This is a major breakthrough, this is not a church but a den of criminals, we will consider the church management as persons of interest, we suspect they have been selling bhang to youths in this area,” said Mr Taari.
He urged members of the public to be vigilant and report criminal activities in their neighbourhood to the security agencies.
“I am told that the residents are afraid to report the criminal activities for fear of reprisals from the criminals, let us not be intimidated, some of these criminals thrive on intimidation, we must work as a team to corner them,” he added.
The residents, however, put the security agencies on the spot, accusing them of abetting crime and allowing criminals to thrive in the area.
Currently, the church premises are deserted with no activity.
The suspects are being held at Ongata Rongai police station awaiting arraignment in court.
