2,393 liquor shops shut in nationwide crackdown: Cabinet
The government has shut down 2,393 non-compliant establishments since the crackdown on illegal alcohol, liquor and bhang began.
A Cabinet note issued from State House on Wednesday said 359 pharmacies and chemists had also been closed.
This comes after Home Affairs Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki announced measures including a 21-day suspension of all 52 licences and permits issued to second-generation alcohol manufacturers and distillers, the revocation of all bar licences issued by districts in contravention of the law and an audit of conflict of interest within the ranks of enforcement agencies.
Other measures announced include a nationwide crackdown on the sale, transport, distribution and consumption of illegal brews and narcotics.
According to the government, 5,835 raids on illegal and narcotic premises have been carried out so far, resulting in the seizure of 289,390 litres of illegal brews and 13,198 litres of counterfeit alcohol.
During the meeting, the Cabinet decided that any public official who opposes these measures to combat illicit brew and drugs will be in breach of Chapter Six of the Constitution and the laws on conflict of interest.
“This includes officials from the National Police Service, National Administration, Kenya Revenue Authority, Kenya Bureau of Standards, Public Health and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, among others,” reads the Cabinet memo.
In view of the increasing cases of alcohol and drug addiction, the Cabinet directed the Ministry of Health to develop a framework for rehabilitation wards in all Level 5 hospitals.
Cabinet Secretary for Health Susan Nakhumicha was also directed to work closely with county governments to ensure that every county has a rehabilitation centre.
The meeting directed the Ministries of Environment, Agriculture and Energy to convene an inter-ministerial committee to deal with the invasion of the Prosophis Julifora tree, commonly known as ‘Mathenge’.
Cabinet noted that the tree has become a menace in 22 districts and has led to the loss of grazing and agricultural land, biodiversity, wetlands and national parks.
The inter-ministerial team has been tasked with exploring opportunities that can be derived from the Mathenge tree. These include commercial opportunities in renewable energy, wood products and modern ways of using charcoal that do not emit carbon.
