At least 10 die in grisly road accident in Machakos

More than 10 passengers have died on the spot in a grisly road accident in Katangi area in Machakos County.

The Matatu which was travelling from Zombe market in Kitui East to Nairobi lost control as it negotiated a corner while descending towards Athi River, where it rolled several times.

Machakos County Police Commander Patrick Lobolia said first responders to the accident initially retrieved eight bodies from the mangled wreckage, with three others still missing.

Mr Lololia told the Nation that the accident happened around 5.30 pm.

“It seems from the appearance; that the driver was unable to control the Matatu on the sloppy stretch towards the river,” he said.

The police commander said once it veered off the road, the Matatu, a Mitsubishi FH model, rolled in the thicket and almost plunged into Athi River.

“We have mobilised several ambulances to rush the injured passengers to nearby hospitals in both Kitui and Machakos counties for emergency medical attention.

Mr Lobolia said police were yet to account for all the passengers aboard the I’ll fated vehicle and investigations had been launched to establish the exact cause of the accident.

“Right now we don’t know whether the accident was as result of break failure or over speeding but first we have to ensure all the injured passengers are attended to” he said.

Machakos County Executive for Health Dr Daniel Yumbya confirmed the county’s Referral Hospital had received 32 injured passengers with 25 of them in critical condition.

“We quickly mobilised several ambulances to rush the injured passengers to our main Machakos Hospital for emergency medical attention, and an expanded makeshift casualty centre was set up to handle them before transferring to wards” Dr Yumbya.

The Health CEC said the injured were first rushed by well wishers and police to the nearby Katangi Health Centre for First Aid as county authorities dispatched ambulances to the accident scene.

Dr John Mungai, the Medical Superintendent at Kitui County Referral Hospital confirmed they had received eight bodies which included four male adults, three female adults and a young girl aged under ten years.

Dr Mungai said the identities of the dead were not immediately established.

Witnesses said there were more than 30 bags of charcoal which were scattered all over the accident scene right from the point where it crashed.

The FM Matatu, as they are commonly known, is among several public service vehicles that make daily trips from Nairobi to Kitui, and back.
