Vaping is less harmful than smoking, a London study finds

A recent study from King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) demonstrated that using vaping products as opposed to smoking significantly lowers exposure to toxins that encourage cancer, lung disease, and cardiovascular disease.
The independent study commissioned by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities at the Department of Health and Social Care indicated that, while vaping does not come without risks (especially for those who have never smoked), those risks pale in comparison to those posed by smoking in the short to medium term.
The paper examined a wide range of characteristics of vaping, including who uses it and what products, the health consequences (both in isolation and in comparison to smoking), and the perceptions of damage among the general population.
Both biomarkers of exposure (measures of potentially dangerous drug levels in the body) and biomarkers of possible injury (measures of biological changes in the body) as a result of smoking or vaping were looked at by scientists.

Biomarkers of exposure provided the best data, and this is also the area of research that has received the most attention. A review of the existing studies revealed that vapers had much reduced levels of toxicants implicated in the principal diseases brought on by smoking, including nitrosamines specific to tobacco, volatile organic compounds, and other pollutants. Overall nicotine levels among vapers were lower or comparable to those of smokers.

According to the report, a comparison of biomarkers between vapers and non-vapers was frequently comparable, however, there was occasionally a higher exposure when vaping.

The researchers came to the conclusion that, despite being less dangerous than smoking, vaping is still likely to carry certain dangers, especially for those who have never smoked.

Biomarkers of exposure provided the most convincing data and the subject of the most investigation. According to a review of the existing studies, vapers had much reduced levels of toxicants such as volatile organic compounds, nitrosamines peculiar to tobacco, and other substances linked to the principal diseases brought on by smoking. Nicotine levels were often lower or comparable to smokers among vapers.

Biomarkers were frequently comparable when compared between vapers and nonsmokers, however, occasionally there was a larger exposure while vaping. The researchers came to the conclusion that while vaping is less harmful than smoking overall, there are still some hazards involved, especially for those who have never smoked.

Dr Jeanelle DeGruchy, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England said, “Every minute someone is admitted to hospital in England due to smoking. Every eight minutes someone dies a smoking-related death. This important study is the latest in a series that carefully pulls together the science of vaping to help reduce the damage from smoking.
“Vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking so the message is clear, if the choice is between smoking and vaping, choose vaping. If the choice is between vaping and fresh air, choose fresh air. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, please give it a go this Stoptober.”
