Gen Zs Speak: How we like our workspaces

With the debate on how to treat cooperate, freshmen, interns, or recent graduates, we have to talk about Gen Zs in the workplace.

From the recent Twitter uproar on how to treat interns in the workplace, most tweets emphasized the common trait of Gen Zs having “more guts” in today’s workplace compared to Millennials and Baby Boomers.

If this is your first time coming across the word Gen Z, these are individuals born from 1997 to 2012.

Gen Zs are doing things differently in the workplace. They focus more on embracing meaningful work, employee well-being, and work-life balance. Gen Zs are here for safety and stability in the workplace and opportunities for learning and growth. They also thrive more in a modern workforce.

Is your company’s work culture and workforce accommodating to Gen Zs?

I went out on a mission to sample views from the horse’s mouth. At VIZX International, a company with employees with an average age of 23-26, I was met with an open office design with a round table where a very young workforce sat, busy with their laptops. Here, traditional office desks would be like relics, tables and comfortable chairs were used instead.

Sharing their thoughts for a segment on NTV’s Teen Republik the Gen Zs opined on Kenyan workspaces, work ethic, social interaction and their expectations.

“The modern working space such as where I am currently investing a lot in the financial literacy of its staff, the mental literacy of its staff. I’d really encourage the modern workspaces to emulate this and invest more in the well-being of their staff so they can be more productive. Also, less micromanagement encourages people to be self-driven and give better results,” Bryan Gacheru, Recruiter at VIZX International.

“For me, an ideal modern workspace as a Gen Z is where the company is able to work on team building, I am able to work on making friends out of colleagues,” Denzel Retoh, Recruiter at VIZX.

The Recruitment Process Outsourcing firm stood out, with a large number of its workforce being Gen Zs from Kenyan University students and fresh graduates. So how does this work?

Annette Achieng, the Head of Communication and Lead Sourcing at VIZX, says all Gen Zs want is to be comfortable in the workplace and they will be as productive as the employer needs.

“You can’t say Gen Z without thinking about a modern workplace. Gen Zs have not settled for traditional sources of income and have embraced more digital and upcoming industrial sectors such as the RPO Business. Gen Zs are very eager to learn and eager to work. We cater to their creativity and growth both mentally and financially. Gen Zs want to be felt in the workspace so don’t just give them and added experience to their resume but actual tangible work experience and knowledge in the sectors they’ve ventured into. We are glad our industry and company have offered opportunities for many young Kenyans, and we urge the rest to get on board with us.” – Annette said.

From the conversations on Saturday’s show on NTV Teen Republik, you could clearly tell Gen Zs are highly skilled digital natives who are acquainted with cutting-edge tech. They also feel more unrestrained in casual work environments with less strict dress codes. Their persistence makes them adaptable in new sectors learning and subscribing to new skills online. Gen Zs are passionate about their career development and quick to spot red flags in the workplace and move on to the next assignment.
