British Council grants KES 140 billion to six Kenyan universities

The Kenyan government has announced a KES 140 billion grant from the British Council to cushion six universities from underfunding.

Speaking after he was awarded an honorary degree by Kibabii University, the speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, stated that the grant will also assist the higher institutions to expand their academic programs, among other things.

Wetang’ula said universities were experiencing financial problems.

“Yesterday, his (President Ruto) cabinet passed and approved the tranch of donation from British Council of KES 140 billion that is going to be given to six institutions for expansion of academic facilities,” he said.

According to Wetang’ula, the earmarked institutions include Kibabii, Moi, Jomo Kenyatta, Kenyatta, and the University of Nairobi.

The institutions’ vice-chancellor, Prof Odeo Ipara, decried that universities were facing a lot of underfunding.

Wetang’ula, who was conferred with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) during the University’s 7th graduation ceremony, said the grant would hit the university accounts soon.

“This being a donor-funded program, it’s not going to be delayed,” he noted.

In his acceptance speech, Speaker Wetang’ula said he was humbled by the gesture and thanked the management of Kibabii University for the incredible honor.

“This honor is not just a reflection of my personal achievements, but it is also a holding of true to the hard work and dedication of many individuals who have supported and inspired me through my journey this far,” he said.

The occasion, which was graced by the principal education for higher education Dr Beatrice Inyangala, also saw the CEO of Stanbic bank, Joshua Oigara, awarded the same degree.

Dr Inyangala assured the universities that school fees would not be increased and asked the graduates to carry the name of Kibabi University in the competitive job market.

In addition, Wetang’ula joined various leaders in condemning the court’s ruling on the LGBTQ community. He termed it immoral and unacceptable for people of the same sex to indulge in sexual activities.

“I want to join all Kenyans, Members of Parliament, and the leadership of the country led by His Excellence Dr William Ruto to tell those LGBTQ perverts that if you want to construct a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah in Kenya, we as Kenya Kwanza government shall deconstruct them with full force,” he said.

The National Assembly speaker also noted that social perverts and those who can’t distinguish between male and female species in life have no room in society.
