Meru family cries for justice after attempted arson leaves child with serious injuries
A family from Miathene Rwongo Rwa Nyanki village Tigania West Constituency Meru county is seeking justice after their house was set ablaze by an unknown arsonist who locked the door from the outside with three children inside.
According to the mother, Zipporah Murungi, at around 6pm she had gone out to take a bucket to fetch water from her neighbour and left her three children in the house, only to see a cloud of smoke coming from her house and screamed for help.
One of the children was able to escape through a window while a seven-year-old Yvonne sustained serious burns before she was rescued by her brave 10-year-old brother who also sustained minor injuries before the house was burnt into ashes.
Zippora Murungi suspects his brother-in-law was behind the incident saying in 2010 he attacked her and cut off her hand over the inheritance of her deceased husband.
At the moment, the mother, with a permanent hand disability and the sole breadwinner of the family, is struggling to take care of Yvonne at Miathene Level 4 Hospital even as the hospital bill continues to escalate.
“I don’t know where to start, I can’t deal with the condition of my hand, my children are looking up to me to pay school fees, the hospital bill is rising day by day and to make matters worse I lost everything in my house please i need help”, said Zipporah.
According to the Area chief, Stanely Muthaura Laichena, the suspect has since been on the run and the police in collaboration with the village head continue to search for him. Stanely also used any resident who had information concerning the suspect to report to the nearest police station.
