Trial of suspected Rwanda Genocide financier, Félicien Kabuga, begins
Félicien Kabuga’s prosecution for suspected crimes committed during the 1994 Rwandan genocide begins on Thursday at The Hague.
This marks a crucial step forward in efforts to ensure accountability for the planning, ordering, and carrying out of the genocide in Rwanda.
Kabuga was indicted for the first time by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in 1997. He is accused of being a mastermind of the genocide as a main financier of the Radio Télévision Libre des Mille Collines, which during the massacre urged people to create barricades and conduct searches, named people to be targeted, and pointed out regions to attack.
Kabuga, now 89, is also accused of assisting and abetting the Interahamwe, a ruling-party militia that hunted down and massacred Tutsi men, women, and children. He is charged with genocide, genocide incitement, genocide conspiracy, and crimes against humanity.
Between April and July 1994, Hutu political and military fanatics planned the murder of roughly three-quarters of Rwanda’s Tutsi population, killing over 500,000 people.
The prosecution and defense are slated to make their opening statements on Thursday and Friday, with evidence in the case expected to begin the following Wednesday.
Kabuga’s attorneys submitted a not guilty plea to the accusations during his first court appearance in 2020.
Kabuga, once one of Rwanda’s wealthiest men, is accused of assisting in the establishment of hate media that exhorted ethnic Hutus to “kill Tutsi cockroaches” and funding armed organizations in 1994.
More than 50 witnesses are set to testify for the prosecution, who stated that they required approximately 40 hours to complete their case.
Ill-health
Kabuga, who is said to be in poor health, appeared before the judges in a wheelchair in August, and it’s unclear whether he’ll be in court on Thursday, as judges are allowing him to attend the hearings via video link.
In June, the judges overruled a defense challenge, determining that Kabuga was fit to stand trial.
