Mombasa magistrate buys new clothes for suspect who showed up in court in tattered attire
Mombasa principal magistrate Vincent Adet on Wednesday issued a fresh pair of clothes to a suspect who arrived before court in a badly ripped top and shorts, leaving him exposed.
Richard Christopher Odhiambo, the suspect charged with defilement, made an emotional appeal to the magistrate, saying he was suffering at Shimo La Tewa prison after authorities refused to provide him any clothes.
Odhiambo said he was forced to wear tattered clothes after jail officials indicated they couldn’t give him clothes since he hadn’t been sentenced yet.
In May of this year, Adet made headlines when he ordered a mini Harambee to fundraise for a middle-aged woman charged with stealing a bale of wheat flour alongside her husband.
”On humanitarian grounds, especially for the first accused person, I have considered the circumstances under which the offense was committed and I sympathize with her situation, with three kids under her care and no source of income and am of the view that let’s buy her a bale of wheat flour and some meat for today,” Adet said.
He further said the accused admitted to police officers who caught her that on the day in question, she was working her typical casual job when her husband summoned her to assist him in carrying a bale of flour from a neighboring car, and she merely stole to feed her children.
