Women in Kilifi County take issue with Kalonzo and Sifuna for questioning Aisha Jumwa’s integrity

A section of women in Kilifi County has castigated Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party leaders for questioning Aisha Jumwa’s integrity after her nomination as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Gender.

The women led by Priscilla Zawadi, Christine Akinyi, and Bendera Charo said that the utterances by Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Nairobi Senator, Edwin Sifuna bordered on disrespect to women leadership.

Ms. Zawadi demanded that the two leaders apologize to Jumwa and all women for their open disrespect.

“We want respect for women in Kilifi County and Aisha Jumwa should be respected and we issue a warning that this is the last time we will entertain such attacks on her character. If she has cases in court, let the courts decide but not you Kalonzo,” said Ms. Zawadi.

Kalonzo is rallying Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party MPs to reject the nomination of various cabinet secretary nominees who are battling court cases including Aisha Jumwa and Mithika Linturi. Accusers of Linturi in the indecent act case have so far declared interest to withdraw the case and opted for an out-of-court settlement.

He had questioned the rationale behind appointing to the cabinet, individuals who are battling criminal court cases.

“If I was William Ruto, I’d withdraw some of these cabinet nominees to avoid national and international shame. We shall direct our MPs to withhold approval of those who do not meet the Chapter Six threshold of our Constitution,” he said in a press briefing last week.

Senator Sifuna on the other hand termed the appointment of Jumwa as a big joke saying that Kenya Kwanza had better people with a clean bill of health to serve in the cabinet.

“‘There are people in Kenya Kwanza like Kithure Kindiki who are competent for any government position but Aisha Jumwa is a big joke. She is not competent or suitable for any position, and just by the names he has proposed, it is clear William Ruto wants to run all the ministries because we know the competencies of the people he nominated,” Sifuna said on Tuesday.

Jumwa is facing various criminal charges in court including murder and graft charges. Three petitioners who had also challenged her academic credentials in court have since filed to withdraw the cases after she failed to clinch the Kilifi Governor seat that was won by Gideon Mung’aro of ODM in the just concluded general election.

She is charged alongside her bodyguard Geoffrey Otieno with killing ODM supporter Jola Ngumbao during campaigns for the Ganda Ward by-election in 2019.

Ms. Christine Akinyi and Ms. Patricia Mutua wondered why the two leaders were fighting women leadership from Kilifi instead of appreciating the roles women had to play in nation-building.

“Our president is not a fool to appoint Jumwa to the cabinet and when Kalonzo says that she murdered, how then did she qualify to vie for governor? We in Kilifi know her capabilities and we are confident she will perform in her new duties and her docket will be the best in the country. All we are asking from you is that you should leave Jumwa alone and give her time to work for Kenyans,” said Ms. Akinyi.

Mutua added that “Kalonzo is like my father but he has never helped our people back in Kitui and Kamba land despite being in elective leadership for many years and so he should desist from mentioning Aisha Jumwa.”

Najma Mangi from Tezo area in Kilifi County lauded President William Ruto for recognizing coastal women in his cabinet saying that it will help in encouraging other women to work hard and achieve their goals.

“President Ruto values our leaders at the Coast that is why he settled on Aisha to help him run the country in that docket,” she said.
