Water companies in Kiambu on the verge of closing due to dwindling water supplies
More than four water companies in Kiambu County are in danger of ceasing operations in three weeks due to the country’s ongoing prolonged drought, which has caused the County’s rivers and dams to dry up.
Ondiri Swamp, a well-known source of clean water used for human use in the constituency and the origin of the Nairobi River, has dried up, endangering the lives of local wildlife.
Environment CEC in Kiambu County David Kuria has stated that human encroachment and the growth of eucalyptus trees planted close to water sources are hazards to water supplies, and that the government will enforce the legislation to uproot these trees and replace them with natural and indigenous vegetation.
According to Margaret Maina, managing director of Limuru Water Company, they have begun rationing water to over 300,000 people and have stopped pumping water in some regions of the Kiambaa Constituency since the amount of water available has significantly decreased.
She further claimed that Manguo Swamp, a major supply of piped and borehole water for Limuru Town and sections of Kiambu West, had fully dried up since its creation and that, as a United Nations Ramsar site, the loss of the ecosystem’s surviving birds has a negative impact on the area’s tourism.
The drought that has affected their area has caused them to trespass on water sources in Kiambu County after their grazing area dried up, and they are now tallying their losses after losing their cattle.
