Two die after gold mine collapses in West Pokot
Two bodies of a couple have remained trapped in rubble since Tuesday evening, following a gold mine collapse at Kambi Karaya near Lami Nyeusi in West Pokot County.
The incident took place while the pair was excavating the mineral in an effort to sustain their livelihood, amid the severe economic challenges faced by Kenyans.
Sarmach Sub-Location Assistant Chief Benjamin Lotudo reports that the ongoing rescue mission is still in progress.
“The man, aged 31, and the woman, aged 28, lost their lives on the spot. Our attempts to retrieve the bodies have been in vain,” he said.
Confirming the occurrence, West Pokot County Police Commandant Peter Kattam highlighted that the two in gold mines when the fatal incident occurred, them being deep within the rubble.
Efforts to rescue the victims proved ineffective due to the requirement for machinery to extract them, according to Kattam.
Kattam further emphasised the hazardous nature of the pits, noting that traditional mining tools like drills and spades haven’t facilitated the security team’s access to the bodies, complicating the rescue operation.
A resident named David Domungura disclosed that the couple had been supporting their family through visits to the gold pits, but tragically ended up buried alive in the process.
“They used to visit the gold pits daily. Unfortunately, they lost their lives. Neighbors heard their cries and rushed to assist, but regrettably, it was already too late,” Domungura lamented.
Domungura shed light on the local population’s turn towards gold mining to cope with the prevalent hunger and food scarcity in the region.
“They sell gold at Sh200 per gramme. The challenging economic conditions have impacted everyone. Many individuals spend their time in the gold mines to earn money,” he revealed.
He urged the national government to prioritize the provision of relief food to families grappling with hunger.
